Historical
Waterford
Waterford City owes it origins to the Viking raiders and settlers of the ninth
and tenth centuries. For the geologist and historians the castles and their ruins
are a worthwhile trip with some of the oldest megalithic tombs and dolmens in
europe. Guided walks around the old city walls are given on a daily basis and
are very pouplar with locals and tourists alike. Some areas of interest include:
- The Edmund Rice Centre commemorating the founder of the Christian Brothers, Blessed
Edmund Ignatius Rice. Situated just next door to our Guesthouse(hense
the name Rice Guesthouse), tours of the museum and shrine may
be aranged.
- Reginalds Tower built by the Vikings in 1003A.D., has since undergone extensive
restoration and is now open to the public seven days a week.
- City Walls dating from the Norman & Anglo period. Including six towers
and long streches of the wall still standing which once enclosed
the entire city.
